One of the easiest ways to insert Shared Parameters into a model is by copying and pasting a schedule with established Shared Parameters from another model rather than establishing Shared Parameters one-by-one through the insert Project Parameters menu. Revit will automatically load and establish the same Shared Parameters as they were set up in the other model. This is great when managing multiple models and ensuring all models are using the same Shared Parameters.

Typically, a Revit Template is set up in such a way that all models follow the template setup. Often times, this Revit Template is copied from a generic location and may require modifying after the Revit Template was established. This could be for many reasons, including improving the project standards from what was learned in the past, meeting new requirements as set out by a BIM Execution Plan, or simply having a different approach. By understanding that Shared Parameters can be copied easily through a schedule, this opens up the flexibility to remove and recreate Shared Parameters quickly at any phase of the project.

Note that removing Shared Parameters will remove all data that was already applied to those parameters for relevant elements. To retain the data, it would be best to establish a system to extract the data and then reapply after recreating the desired Shared Parameters, for example through schedules, Ideate BIM Link, or Dynamo.

A typical workflow is as follows:

  1. Establish a blank Revit model, or Revit Template, as the Master for Shared Coordinates.
  2. In the Master model, create Shared Parameters in the project either one-by-one through the typical manual method, or using a Dynamo script.
  3. Create a schedule and add all your Shared Parameters into the schedule.
  4. Copy the schedule by selecting it and then pressing Ctrl+C on the keyboard or on the Modify tab click the copy button.
  5. In the same Revit session, open another Revit model where you would like to add the Shared Parameters and either press Ctrl+V on the keyboard to paste, or on the Modify tab click Paste From Clipboard. You can do this from any view.
  6. The new schedule will be copied into the Revit model along with the Shared Parameters automatically created. Note that only the Shared Parameters added to the schedule will be created. Other Shared Parameters that exist in the Master model but were not in the schedule would not be copied over.
