Downloading and installing packages in Dynamo is a regular routine task when using Dynamo. Packages are bundles of custom scripted nodes created by various users and groups around the world. Custom scripts help increase Dynamo's functionality and from time to time the packages need updating when their creators push out a newer version.
Occasionally, some scripts may be created with old packages which would require downgrading packages to work properly. This is generally not recommended unless you are aware of the effects of downgrading packages. Instead, it's best to recreate the scripts with the latest nodes that are optimized with the latest version of Dynamo.
When installing new packages, it's recommended that you save all of your work before doing so. Depending on the current packages installed, Dynamo may require you to close and restart Revit to complete the installation of packages.
To install or upgrade new packages, the general steps are as follows:
- Open Revit.
- Create a new blank project, or open an existing project.
- We recommend opening a blank project with no template to quickly open a new blank project for the purposes of accessing Dynamo. Choose any unit system as it does not matter at this time.
- Open Dynamo.
- In versions Revit 2017 and later, Dynamo is prepackaged with Revit. The launch button is found in the Manage tab.
- In versions Revit 2016 and before, Dynamo is a plugin which is downloaded from dynamobim.org. The launch button is found in the Add-ins tab.
- At the top, choose Packages, and then choose "Search for a Package".
- Find a package that you wish to install and click the down arrow button.
- By clicking the down arrow you will be downloading the latest version of the package.
- You may customize the download location by clicking the small arrow and then selecting the desired drop down
- It is possible to choose an older version of the package for installation by clicking the package to drop down the package history and then choosing a legacy version to install. The creator's update notes can also be read in this drop down as shown below.
- Follow the prompts on screen to finish installation.
- You may be asked to uninstall an existing package in order to install a newer version, be prepared to close Dynamo and Revit to complete the installation. If a complete restart is required, go back to Step 1. Otherwise proceed to the next step.
- You may be warned that the package or one of its dependencies contains Python scripts or binaries, click OK to acknowledge the warnings. This warning is very common.
- After the package is successfully installed, you may begin using the new Package immediately.
